Christi Center is built on the work by interns, volunteers, and staff. Once a month, we will highlight a volunteer in appreciation of their hard work and service.
Join us in welcoming them to the Christi Center.
Hannah
Hello! My name is Hannah, and I will begin my role as an MSW intern at The Christi Center in January 2025. Currently, I am pursuing my master’s in social work at The Ohio State University, building on my background as a graduate with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, where I focused on restorative justice. My approach to supporting others is grounded in compassion and a desire to create safe, supportive environments.
With a background in social services, I have had the privilege of working with diverse communities, which has shaped my empathy, active listening skills, and dedication to providing meaningful support that empowers those I work with. I look forward to bringing this perspective to The Christi Center and learning from others as I continue my journey in social work.
In my spare time, I enjoy baking, spending time with my loved ones, and running.
Josh
Josh (he/him) is a graduate student at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin, joining the Christi Center as a Counseling Intern. “I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to complete my final field internship at the Christi Center and to learn alongside this incredible community. My journey into grief work began before I was born, after my brother Ari passed away at age two due to congenital health issues. I was born into a family navigating profound loss and working to rediscover meaning and purpose. My parents’ dedication to honoring Ari’s life by supporting older adults and individuals with disabilities shaped my understanding of resilience and the power of community. My own career in the healthcare field, mostly working with older adults, has deepened this perspective and inspired me to continue this work. I believe that navigating life after loss requires immense courage and vulnerability, and I’m honored to help support others on this path of healing and growth.”
Sydney
Hello! My name is Sydney Sommer, and I’m so excited to start my internship with The Christi Center. I’m currently earning my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and have a strong passion for walking alongside people through their grief and healing journeys.
The Christi Center’s mission of offering support to those navigating loss resonates deeply with me. As someone who’s experienced the impact of grief on a personal and professional level, I’ve seen firsthand how crucial it is to have a safe space to share your story and find connection. I’m inspired by the work being done here to create that space for individuals in the community.
I am very honored to be joining this incredible team, learn from the amazing staff and my fellow interns here, and hear the stories of strength and resilience from those we serve.
Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, reading, and spending time with those who mean a lot to me, and trying out new coffee shops around Austin!
I look forward to meeting you all!
